Notes

  • Of Malaysia's colonial masters, the Portuguese and Dutch contributed very little towards the education of the locals. It was only in 1869, with the establishment of the Isemonger Committee, that some form of education policy was formulated by the British colonial government who took over from the Dutch. English-medium schools were established all over the Malay Peninsula, greatly aided by Christian missionary teachers from Europe and America.3
  • According to the 1879 Colonial Office List (p 373) he was appointed to the Audit Office London on 7 February 1856. He then became:

    Chief Clerk to Auditor General - Straits Settlements 4 September 1867;
    Acting Colonial Treasurer, Commissioner of stamps, Accountant-General to the Supreme Court and member of both Councils, Straits Settlements from 3 March 1869 to 10 May 1870;

    Assistant Treasurer - Straits Settlements, November 1869;

    Is Justice of the Peace  for the Straits Settlements; places in charge of Malacca Treasury and Stamp Officer,  September 1872;

    Duties of collector of land revenue added, February 1874;

    Appointed Magistrate of Police and Commissioner of Court of Requests, Malacca 1 June 1874.

    Magistrate of Police and Commissioner of Court of Requests,  District Welleley - 1878

    Acting Auditor General - 1879

    Postmaster General - Straits Settlements - 1882

    Colonial Treasurer and Member Executive and Legislative Councils - 1888

    Acting Resident Councillor - Malacca - 1888-9

    Acting Auditor General -  Straits Settlements -  Jan to Dec 1895

    Edwin then officially retired and the year was incorrectly recorded in the 1928 Edition of the Malaya Journal as 1894.3
