A fever hospital, later called the Eastern Hospital, opened in 1870 to treat patients suffering from typhus, scarlet fever, enteric disorders and smallpox. Scarlet fever was very common in the late 1800's and this may be what William and his sister, Elizabeth, were suffering from.

The hospital was closed in 1982 and most of the buildings were demolished to make way for the new Homerton Hospital which opened in 1986.
