"In 1785 the town clerk had the nerve to record as if it were corporation business the proceedings of a meeting at the George to appoint waywardens, quite evidently the business of the parishes. Perhaps the last was a mistake, for Daniel Follett Scadding was new to the job as town clerk and did not last for long: he was dismissed "for divers negligences made" and was replaced by John Conway of Wells, gentleman, in August 1786."
